Requirements for a Concentration in Religious Studies

Students may effectively major in Religious Studies by selecting a Philosophy major and choosing the Religious Studies concentration. Although many Philosophy and Religious Studies course are cross-listed, no specialized training in philosophy is required for the Religious Studies concentration.

NOTE: The curriculum in Religious Studies is currently undergoing extensive restructuring.  Some of the courses indicated below and on the degree audit have been dropped from the catalog.  Other courses may be substituted with approval in writing from the student's advisor or the assistant chair for Religious Studies.

B.A. in Philosophy with a Concentration in Religious Studies
Students who elect to concentrate in Religious Studies must complete a minimum of 27 semester hours of Religious Studies (REL) courses with the following course distributions:

  • 6 hours in "Western" religions (REL 2029 and one of the following courses): REL 1004, 1005, 1006, 1007, 2005*, 2006, 2101, 2120*, 2130*, 3005, 3051, 3101, 3102, 3104, 4005, 4006, 4011, 4012, 4095, 4096, 4227, 4500.

  • 6 hours in "non-Western" religions (REL 2027 and one of the following courses): REL 4191, 4600, 4800.

  • 3 hours in the theoretical study of religion (one of the following courses): REL 2028, 3015, 3028, 3201, 3236, 3300, 4032, 4050, 4300, 4944. 

Of the 27 hours, 15 hours must be taken in courses numbered 3000 and above, and at least 6 of these 15 hours must be numbered 4000 or above.  Courses marked with an asterisk* have been dropped from the catalog and may be substituted.

Requirements for a Minor in Religious Studies

Minors must complete 15 hours in REL courses with the following distribution from approved courses

  • 3 hours in "Western" religions: REL 1004, 1005, 1006, 1007, 2005*, 2006, 2029, 2101, 2120*, 2130*, 3005, 3051, 3101, 3102, 3104, 4005, 4006, 4011, 4012, 4095, 4096, 4227, 4500.

  • 3 hours in "non-Western" religions: REL 2027, 4191, 4600, 4800.

  • 3 hours in the theoretical study of religion: REL 2028, 3015, 3028, 3201, 3236, 3300, 4032, 4050, 4300, 4944. 

Of these 15 hours, at least 6 must be taken at the 3000 level or above, and these must be taken while in residence at LSU.  Courses marked with an asterisk* have been dropped from the catalog and may be substituted.
