LSU UNDERGRADUATE PHILOSOPHY DEGREE
LSU undergraduate philosophy majors receive rigorous training in the history of thought, logic, and contemporary research into the core areas of philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics. Due in part to the intrinsically interdisciplinary nature of the these fields of study, a significant number of our majors double major in philosophy and some other discipline.

In completing a degree in philosophy, students develop transferable skills that are the hallmark of a liberal arts education:  the ability to critically and systematically think through difficult issues, to creatively solve problems, and to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
These skills not only enable students to flourish as persons, they prepare students for the 21st century workplace, where such skills are increasingly sought after (see "Philosophy is Back in Business," "Philosophy's Makeover," and "I Think, Therefore I Earn").  Writing well is a particularly important component of a philosophy degree.  To help students with writing in philosophy courses, we have developed explicit criteria for evaluating student papers (available here).

LSU UNDERGRADUATE PHILOSOPHY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Philosophy majors take a minimum of 30 hours of PHIL courses, including

• PHIL 2010 (Symbolic Logic I) or PHIL 4010 (Symbolic Logic II),
• PHIL 2020 (Ethics) or PHIL 4943* (Problems in Ethical Theory),
• PHIL 2033 (History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy), and
• PHIL 2035 (History of Modern Philosophy), plus
• 18 hours of electives.

At least 15 of the 30 hours of philosophy must be in courses numbered 3000 and above, and at least 6 of the 15 must be at the 4000 level. Degree credit will not be allowed for more than 6 hours of courses numbered below 2000. Note that 2033 is offered only in Fall semester, and 2035 is offered only in Spring semester.

A minor in Philosophy requires 15 hours of philosophy, at least 6 of which must be 3000 or 4000 level.

*NOTE: Students who are subject to the Fall 2010 catalog degree requirements should substitute PHIL 3052 (Moral Philosophy) for PHIL 4943. Please contact the Philosophy Department for further information.
