Congratulations
to Jeffrey Roland, winner of the 2010 Robert Udick Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award.  This award is given to one non-tenured faculty member of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences each year in recognition of excellence in undergraduate teaching.


RESEARCH NOTES ::

Francois Raffoul's new book, The Origins of Responsibility, has been published by Indiana University Press.  In this work, Raffoul undertakes a historical genealogy of the concept of responsibility, and explores its phenomenological and ontological senses.

Jeffrey Roland has recently published  four articles: "On Naturalizing the Epistemology of Mathematics" (Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 2009), "A Euthyphronic Problem for Kitcher's Epistemology of Science" (Southern Journal of Philosophy 2009), "Concept Grounding and Knowledge of Set Theory" (Philosophia 2010), and "Nominalsm and Causal Theories of Reference" (SATS--Nordic Journal of Philosophy 2010).

James Rocha has two articles forthcoming: "Sexual Harassment and Coercive Offers" (Journal of Applied Philosophy) and "Autonomy within Subservient Careers" (Ethical Theory and Moral Practice). 

Jon Cogburn and Jeffrey Roland have two articles forthcoming: "Anti-Luck Epistemologies and Necessary Truths," is forthcoming in Philosophia and "Strong, Therefore Sensitive: Misgiving's about DeRose's Contextualism" is forthcoming in Grazer Philosophische Studien.

Strategic Plan 2011


Courses in philosophical and religious inquiry have been taught at LSU since the founding of the university.  The Department of Philosophy was organized as a separate academic unit in the 1930s, and a separate Religious Studies Program was added in 1980.  The department took its present name in 1997.

The department currently offers:
  • An undergraduate major in Philosophy
  • An undergraduate major in Philosophy with a concentration in Religious Studies
  • Undergraduate minors in both Philosophy and Religious Studies
  • The Master of Arts in Philosophy

Information about these programs can be obtained by clicking onto the appropriate link above.  Note that at the present time the department does not offer a graduate degree in Religious Studies.  Students interested in pursuing graduate studies in Religious Studies may wish to the consider the interdisciplinary program in Liberal Arts (Master of Arts in Liberal Arts) offered through the College of Arts and Sciences.
