Suzanne Marchand, German Orientalism in the Age of Empire: Religion, Race and Scholarship. Studies German “Orientalistik” synthetically, and suggests that we must appreciate German orientalism’s origins and development in the context of philology, biblical studies and the debate on German origins. "[I]ntellectual history on an epic scale . . . challenges received truths about European thought and how it should be studied.” – Anthony Grafton, Princeton University.  (Cambridge University Press, 2009.)

LSU Historians among top honorees

Three members of the History Department--professors Paul Hoffman, Alecia Long and Suzanne Marchand--were among the faculty members named as "Rainmakers" in the university's 2009 ceremony.  According to a press release, the award recognizes LSU professors "who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and creative scholarship, compete for external funding at the highest levels and attract and mentor exceptional graduate students."
