SECONDARY EDUCATION CONCENTRATION WITHIN THE HISTORY MAJOR
The secondary education concentration within the History
Major is designed to prepare students for careers as social studies teachers in
middle and high schools. When a student

To earn this degree, the student must:
1. Meet the requirements for admission to teacher education outlined on p. 164 of the 2007-2008 General Catalogue.

Fulfill the General Education demands of the University
as a whole and the requirements for graduation of the
2. Complete EDCI 2001.
3. Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher and pass the Praxis II examination (Current discussions at the state and university levels could also result in grade requirements for all courses, particularly those in the content and professional education areas).
4. Fulfill the specific requirements for majors as established by the Department of History (33 hours minimum).
5. Complete 12 hours of courses chosen from one of the following areas of study: Economics, Geography, Political Science (Area Requirement 1). Below are the courses that the departments require to complete this area requirement.
6. Complete 9 hours of courses chosen from one of the following other than the one chosen for 12 hours: Economics, Geography, Political Science (Area Requirement 2). Below are the courses that the departments require to complete this area requirement.
7. Take all of the paired courses of History and Curriculum and Instruction in the appropriate sequence. These include EDCI 3001 paired with HIST 3001; EDCI 3002 paired with HIST 3002; and EDCI 4003 paired with HIST 4403.
8. Complete the capstone courses in History (HIST 4404) and Curriculum and Instruction (EDCI 4004) and finish satisfactorily Student Teaching (EDCI 4005).

Requirements for the History major include:
A minimum of 33 semester hours of History courses.
HIST 1001, 1003, 2055, and 2057 (12 hours).
15 semester hours in History courses numbered 3000 or above.
No
more than 12 of the 15 semester hours above 3000 may be taken in any one of the
following subject areas:
6 additional hours in History. Strongly recommended but not required courses are HIST 3071 (Louisiana History) and HIST 2061 (African-American History).
