 Reconsidering Islam in a South Asian Context, by M. Reza Pirbhai: Presents and challenges the dominant, Orientalist-influenced perspectives of Islamic South Asia and the colonial period. A  comprehensive reinterpretation of doctrinal, literary and colonial sources  from the reign of the 'Great Mughals' to end of the 'British Raj' (1526-1947) results in an alternative vision of this transformative period, and an original paradigm of Islamic doctrine and Muslim practice applicable more broadly. LSU Historians among top honorees

Three members of the History Department--professors Paul Hoffman, Alecia Long and Suzanne Marchand--were among the faculty members named as "Rainmakers" in the university's 2009 ceremony.  According to a press release, the award recognizes LSU professors "who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and creative scholarship, compete for external funding at the highest levels and attract and mentor exceptional graduate students."

New course descriptions posted

Students planning their next semester's course load can now find on this site full descriptions of upper-level History courses, including professors' descriptions of the subject matter and theoretical approach of each course.  In most cases this includes information regarding the workload, including books to be read, the number of papers, and exams.  Offerings for Spring 2010 include a full roster of 3000-level undergraduate seminars, as well as 4000-level courses in diverse topics including the Early Middle Ages, Jefferson and Hamilton, the Vietnam War, and much more.  Click below to access the course descriptions.
