Associate Dean Margaret Parker

Before joining the dean’s office as interim associate dean in August 2006, Dr. Margaret Parker served as director of Women’s and Gender Studies, director of Academic Programs Abroad and graduate advisor for Hispanic Studies in her home department, Foreign Languages and Literatures. Early in her career at LSU she coordinated the basic Spanish language courses and supervised graduate teaching assistants. A passionate advocate of study abroad, she has directed summer programs in Mexico and Spain.

Dr. Parker received her Ph.D. from Indiana University in Spanish Literature with concentrations in medieval Castilian literature and Hispano-Arabic Studies and a minor in Spanish Linguistics. Her areas of research are medieval Castilian literature and the representation of women in Hispanic literature. In 2004 she received a grant to design a
service learning course in Spanish, and in 2006 she was one of several faculty members from the College of Arts and Sciences who were awarded stipends to attend a Communication across the Curriculum Institute, which led to certification of the Spanish service learning course as communication intensive.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Parker works closely with Assistant Dean Rebecca Caire and the counselors and staff of Student Services. She represents the college at recruiting and orientation events and on the Committee for International Studies and Programs. Working on enrollment management issues provides an opportunity to interact with departmental chairs, and representing the dean in meetings with candidates who are interviewed for faculty positions in the college provides an opportunity to describe to prospective colleagues the impressive resources and support that the college provides for the faculty. She describes the dean’s office as a stimulating, supportive, and dynamic environment and her colleagues as original thinkers and creative problem-solvers.
