MEET THE DEAN
In January 2004, Dr. Guillermo Ferreyra, Chair of the Mathematics Department, left that position to become Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Ferreyra has been at LSU since 1983, becoming a full professor in 1996 and chair of his department in 2000.
Dr. Ferreyra received his doctorate in Mathematics from Rutgers University and his undergraduate degree from Universidad de Cordoba in Argentina. The co-editor of two books, Evolution Equations and Differential Geometry and Control, Dr. Ferreyra specializes in mathematical models of optimization (how to perform best) in areas such as finance and economics. He has published more than 25 papers on mathematical models in areas as diverse as economics and advertising.
He has received national grants for research in mathematical models, to organize conferences, and to mentor students. Current mentoring projects include work on a National Science Foundation Grant to support economically disadvantaged students, and directing a student’s research using mathematical models for ecological research in Louisiana.
Dr. Ferreyra lives in Baton Rouge with his wife, Sara Cattaneo, and their daughter Jessica.
Of his position, Dr. Ferreyra says, “It is an honor to serve the University during this crucial time in the capacity of Dean of Arts and Sciences. The College includes a large faculty of distinguished scholars, researchers and teachers, and an outstanding body of students. In fact, the steadily improving quality of LSU’s student body, and its high expectations for a superb education, is one of the driving engines in the transformation of LSU.”
